Venue: Lurie Engineering Center (dinner), Arthur Miller Theater (performance)
Speaker: Alex Kip and cast members of My Other Voice Two years after graduating from the University of Michigan, an event that was immediately preceded by a terrifying diagnosis of cancer that threatened to end his career, actor and playwright Alex Kip has penned a play inspired by his experience." -- From the UMHS press release My Other Voice Official Website For our first MAP event of the 2013/14 season, participants engaged in a theater experience based around the play "My Other Voice." Prior to the play, participants were joined by cast members Alex Kip, Trevor St. John-Gilbert, Al Fallick, Jim Cavacolli, and Reilly Richardson, along with Elaine Sims, director of the University of Michigan Health System's Gifts of Art program. Although each table was provided with guiding questions to help prompt discussion, participants were encouraged to engage in organic conversation. Each dinner table had a cast member or special guest, allowing participants to ask questions about the play and the artistic process. After attending the play, MAP learners participated in a "talk-back session" that allowed audience members to engage in a dialogue about cancer care with physicians. The session was led by the play's cast members, along with Dr. Joel Howell and MAP participant Jonathan Awori, M3. Since the talk-back session was open to all audience members, participants were able to both ask their own questions, discuss issues, and hear alternate perspectives about the play. |
