10.24.2012
Venue: University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA)
Speaker: Andrew Gurstelle and Carole McNamara
We will be guided through the new African Art and the Shape of Time exhibition by Andrew Gurstelle. Andrew is an Anthropologist and a co-curator of the show. The exhibit is considered a collection of some of the most important pieces of African art in the world right now. This is an excellent opportunity to learn about African art from one of the curators of the show and an expert West African art and anthropology.
We will also be looking at the much-anticipated Benjamin West: General Wolfe and the Art of Empire curated by Carole McNamara, Senior Curator of Western Art at UMMA. Carole will also be spending the evening with us, guiding us through her show and describing this comprehensive collection of works related to General Wolfe, a hero of the French Indian War.
This special event at UMMA will include looking at and comparing two very different exhibitions --- one from the continent of Africa with fascinating background and new ideas generated about 'what is art" -- the other exhibit will look at western art of the 18th century where the curator will talk about important movements in the history of painting.
