Gabriel Kahane is a singer-songwriter, pianist, and composer who toes the line between classical composition and pop music. For a sample of his latest songs you can see his NPR Tiny Desk Concert here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ce0hzXb_GWI, and for a good laugh you can hear a sample of his Craigslistlieder (stylistically traditional songs but with text pulled from Craigslist) here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9CibfyfjKLk
yMusic is an innovative ensemble known for its expansion of the classical chamber genre. The ensemble bridges the gaps between classical music and independent bands through collaboration and the commissioning of new works. The sextet consists of Hideaki Aomori (bass clarinet), CJ Camerieri (trumpet), Clarice Jensen (cello), Rob Moose (violin), Nadia Sirota (viola), and Alex Sopp (flute). Both as a group and independently, the members of yMusic have collaborated with artists such as My Brightest Diamond, Bon Iver, The National, Sufjan Stevens, Yo-Yo Ma, and the New York Philharmonic. You can see a sample of their work here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9YxVg3s0wA
This concert featured songs from Gabriel Kahane’s latest album, along with older selections from his songbook and his musical theatre compositions. Following the performance we were joined by the musicians in yMusic in a post-concert discussion and dessert reception.
