The Medical Arts Program invites you to attend a kinesthetic empathy workshop led by NYC based modern dance company Megan Bascom & Dancers followed by dinner and discussion.
How does your kinesthetic sense play a role in your ability to respond empathically to other people, or to your patients? Kinesthetic empathy means feeling physical sensations or emotions within one’s own body while observing the actions of another human. In this workshop, we will explore if heightened individual kinesthetic awareness enhances how we read one another’s body language and if that awareness can open new doors into empathic communication. Choreographer Megan Bascom has developed movement exercises to explore how we understand our bodies in space and in relation to others. This workshop will involve an hour of physical movement shared by all participants, followed by an informal performance. We will then discuss the performance and our experiences over dinner. Interest in kinesthetic awareness and empathic responsiveness is key. No prior movement or dance experience is necessary. Please wear non-restrictive clothing.
